Ancient wildlife sculpture
Eastern moa
Moa momona, the slender one. Drawn and funded; nowhere decided.
Paid for and drawn. Not built.

Where we are now
A drawing and a spot. The design is a pair 2 m by 2.4 m, two birds offset on a concrete plinth with no foliage depicted, in Corten plate with the skeleton profile-cut from polished stainless and stood off the surface.
What it becomes
A pair standing on the gully side, with the cover the plan puts on this ground grown up around them.
Why this matters
Five of the trail’s subjects are moa, and the reason for that is the range: from a 3.6 m giant down to a bird about a metre tall. This is the slender one in the middle, and standing them along one walk is the argument that moa was never a single animal.

In deep time
Emeus crassus, moa momona. Around 1.8 m tall and 70 kg — one of the more slender moa, and still a very big bird.
